Bar soap is a solid bar of soap, typically used in personal care for hand, face and body washing.
What soap is made from determines whether the bar soap is an all natural bar of soap made from saponifying fats and an alkaline solution, otherwise known as old fashioned lye soap. Or some bar soaps are simply a mixture of surfactants, sometimes made to appear natural.

All natural bar soap ingredients usually include some sort of oil or fat, saponified with an alkaline solution, otherwise known as lye. Other ingredients, such as perfumes (natural or not), colorants, and textures, can be added for extra benefits.
The best bar soaps are great for everyday to:
- hand washing
- how to exfoliate your skin

Using bar soap for these personal cleaning methods is best if the bar soap is natural, full fat vegetable oils, saponified in the old fashioned cold processed soap making method.
Any kind of soap made with vegetable oil is a Castile soap. Castile soaps, are traditionally olive oil, but can be made from any vegetable oil, including but not limited to: sunflower oil, coconut oil, palm oil, soy bean oil, castor oil, olive oil, safflower oil, shea butter, coco butter.
Other natural soap fats are beef or deer tallow, pork lard, chicken fat, or any animal fat. These animal fats are still included in the natural bar soap category, if they are made with lye as the saponification catalyst.

Tidbit:
While cleaning the factory one day, we found some old soap in a size we no longer made. They must have accidentally been knocked off the shelf. We knew the bars had to be at least a few years old. Despite being a little dusty, once that layer was washed off, it lathered up the same as always, and smelled beautifully.

Bar Soap Tip
Get the most out of an Ithaca Soap Bar with the simple tips:
- Store in a dark dry place: if you're like most people, they buy a few bars of soap at a time and store them. We recommend storing them in a dark, dry place, like a linen closet. Since our bars come in a handy box, there's no need for a bag or anything. If you buy scented bars, you can put them in between your sheets and towels for a little extra pleasant aroma.
- Once you start using the bar, place on a well drained, dry soap dish. Storing a bar in a puddle between uses will cause it to slowly wash down the drain.
- For a shower, lather up using a loofah or sea sponge for the best and most lather, while using the least soap. A wash cloth is a good second choice, since the terrycloth will soak up much of the lather. Rubbing the soap directly all over your body is the least efficient way to use a bar of soap, and will generate the least lather.
Please Note
Ithaca Bar Soaps are a cold process bar soap formulation, that remains solid throughout its use. For a longer life, keep in a dry place between washings. If a bar of soap sits in a puddle, it will shorten its lifespan, but will not turn to a liquid. If you attempt to melt Ithaca Soap Bars, they will re-harden eventually.
Ithaca Soap's Instant Liquid Soap is a completely different formulation. This patented soap formulation is not meant to be used as bar soap. Its solid appearance will immediately begin to turn into liquid soap, when it comes in contact with water, diluting it into our same Ithaca Soap Liquid Soap.
How does soap work
Organic hand soap is filled with love and goodness, while it gently kills germs. Lather is important. When a soap is natural, lather has a very useful function. A properly made natural soap bar will always lather you up all the way down to the sliver and never spoil or turn to mush.
How does soap work?:
The lather breaks down viruses by puncturing the lipid membrane on contact, thereby exposing it to the soap's alkaline environment, where pathogens cannot survive.
A soap's lather function is slightly different for bacteria. It collects excess oil and dirt by forming micelles. Read more about this here.
This sudsing action takes 20-30 seconds, and then pathogens are eliminated.
