Squashes at The Ithaca Farmers Market

It's officially Autumn and the apples and squashes are abundant this year. My chickens have been enjoying pumpkins and their seeds from the pumpkin patch grown in the "especially them patch".

I love to accumulate a variety of winter squashes this time of year to enjoy during the colder months.

Come to The Ithaca Farmers Market or go to the one closer to where you live, and stock your larder with winter squash. We don't have a proper larder, so I store my winter squashes in the greenhouse, the garage, the back covered vestibule entrance to our house. Wherever I have the room and where they will stay dry. Being in dry storage is crucial to them lasting. If your basement is cool and dry, that's an excellent storage place. The ones we haven't eaten and still have through the cold months, I cover with a blanket, since my "larder" is in unheated building, and freezing temperatures can shorten their storage lifespan. Every week, I rotate and turn them to prevent soft spots.

Coop Update

I put up a few coop photos and added a short article about how I clean my chicken coop every morning with Waterless Hand Soap. It's fabulous for keeping my coop free of pathogens. I also put up a photo of our 3 1/2 month old baby rooster. His name is Peridot, and he's blue-purple with blue eyes. A gift from the universe!
